Design Engineering
I design and build modern websites and digital products in one connected workflow, moving from strategy and UX through build, deployment and iteration myself.

The Discipline
Design engineering is the practice of designing and building a digital product as one continuous act, instead of two separate jobs handed between a designer and a developer. A design engineer owns the idea from the first sketch through a live, working product: the visual direction, the interface, the code that ships it, and the iteration after launch.
It’s a different discipline from a traditional UX designer, who typically hands off a finished file to an engineering team, and different from a software engineer, who typically builds to someone else’s specification. A design engineer sits in the middle: senior enough in craft and strategy to make the creative call, and fluent enough in modern tools to build the real thing, not a static mockup of it.
I come at it from the opposite direction most people expect. Most design engineers start as developers and pick up design skills. I started in brand strategy and creative direction, spent more than 25 years running a creative agency and building a consumer brand from scratch, and then went deep on modern, AI-native development. The result is a design engineer who leads with judgment, what to build, for whom, and why, backed by the technical fluency to actually ship it.
AI made production easier. It did not make taste, strategy or judgment easier.
What’s Included
Websites & Digital Products
Modern, responsive sites and product experiences designed and built end to end, not handed off mid-project.
Interactive Tools & Lead Magnets
Assessments, calculators, configurators and other tools that do more than present information.
Design Systems & UI
Reusable components and visual systems that keep a growing product consistent and fast to ship.
Modern Web Stack
Built on Next.js, Vercel, Supabase and Stripe, current infrastructure instead of a legacy CMS.
AI-Native Development
Claude, ChatGPT and Perplexity built into research, design and code from day one, not a chatbot bolted onto an old process.
Deployment & Iteration
Sites ship, then keep improving against real usage, not a one-time handoff.
Why It Matters
The person who designs the experience is the same person who builds it, so intent doesn’t get lost in translation.
25+ years of creative direction shapes every decision, not just the visual layer.
The workflow is built around modern AI tools from day one, research, design and code, not a chatbot bolted onto an old process.
Modern infrastructure, Next.js, Vercel, Supabase, instead of legacy platforms that need constant patching.
My Stack
Tools aren’t the strategy. They’re how AI-native thinking becomes a working product, fast. Here’s what’s actually in my stack, and why each piece is there.
Adobe Creative Suite
Where craft still starts. Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign handle brand assets, image work and print-quality output that AI tools can’t yet replace.
Claude, Code & Design
My primary collaborator on both sides of the work: Claude Code writes and reviews production code, and Claude handles content, copy and creative iteration, in my voice, not a generic one.
Vercel
Where sites live. Fast, edge-hosted deployment with automatic scaling and none of the maintenance overhead of a traditional host.
GitHub
Source of truth for every project. Version control and a real production workflow, not a folder of file copies named “final.”
Supabase
The backend for anything that needs data: authentication, databases and storage behind dashboards, forms and logged-in experiences.
ChatGPT
A second perspective for research, ideation and stress-testing a direction before it gets built.
Perplexity
Fast, sourced research when I need a real answer, not a guess, especially for competitive and market context.

FAQ
Someone who moves from strategy and creative direction into UX, design, build, deployment and iteration, instead of handing a finished design off to a separate development team. The person shaping the experience stays close to the build.
AI-forward usually means AI bolted onto an existing process: a chatbot for brainstorming, a first draft, then business as usual. AI-native means the workflow itself, research, design, code and deployment, is built around modern AI tools from the start. I’m AI-native, not just AI-forward.
No. I’m a designer and creative director who builds with modern tools, including Claude, GitHub, Vercel and Supabase. For work that needs deep backend or infrastructure engineering, I bring in a trusted engineering partner or route the project through Birdsall.ai.
Modern marketing sites, product UX, interactive lead magnets, assessments, dashboards and simple commerce flows, built on Next.js, Vercel, Supabase and Stripe.
Adobe Creative Suite for craft and visual work, Claude for both code and design, GitHub for version control, Vercel for deployment, Supabase for data and auth, and ChatGPT and Perplexity for research and ideation.
A developer builds what they’re told to build. Here, the same person who shapes the strategy and the interface also builds it, so nothing gets lost in a handoff.
Larger builds, ongoing engineering support, or multi-person engagements route through my agency, Birdsall.ai.
